There is a Scandinavian legend about lilac origin. Scandinavians are assured that the lilac was created by the sun and rainbow. The goddess of spring woke up the Sun and its true companion Iris (rainbow), she mixed the sun beams with motley rainbow beams, and started to generously strew them on fresh furrows, on meadows, branches of trees – and everywhere appeared flowers, and the earth exulted from such good fortune. So like that they reached Scandinavia, but the rainbow had only lilac paint left. Soon there was so much lilac that the Sun decided to mix the paints on the palette of the Rainbow and started to sow the white beams so to violet lilac also joined and white lilac.

Pan decided to talk to Syringa, but she was frightened and ran away. Pan ran after her, wishing to calm her, but the nymph has unexpectedly turned into a smelling sweet bush with gentle lilac flowers. So like that appeared a beautiful and gentle tree with violet flowers named lilac.
In French lilac is named “Lilas” – “lilac”. In countries of Western Europe and America the name of the plant is also connected with prevailing color of the flowers – lilac. The word lilac is a Persian word and designates simply “flower”. In Iran and Turkey the lilac has rather interesting name – “the fox tail”, probably, because of the form of the inflorescences (the extended fluffy inflorescences remind the dissolute fox tail).
On the Balkans there is a legend about lilac. Somehow the powerful deity has brought down its anger on human race, and forced to flow rains days and nights, without stopping even for a moment. The rivers and lakes were overflowed, and a terrible flood started, washing off everything on its way. The frightened people rushed to mountains, hoping to escape on tops. But the water rose all above and above, and the highest mountain was just about to disappear under the water. And then a young and beautiful shepherd decided to sacrifice itself to the angered god. With entreaty about compassion he rushed in abyss. And the God took pity, the rain stopped, the water level lowed, and the young man’s relatives were rescued. And the God spared him too. And all the earth around was covered by thickets of green bushes which were covered by fragrant beautiful brushes of white and lilac color. And that was the lilac.
Girls used lilac for guessing: it was considered that if to find a five petal flower that meant that you would be happy. With special attention young girls peered at odorous brushes, looking for flowers which instead of usual four petals had five, and sometimes even more. The white lilac differed from violet lilac with especial abundance of such flowers; at white lilac you can meet more often the five petal flowers. Having found such flower, lucky women dried it and stored in books, or ate for fortune. This custom existed in many countries! But it happens that instead of four petals there are only three. Then, on the contrary, these flowers were considered as misfortune, and they were avoided in any possible way.
